On an atoll in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, kids and their adult leaders are doing amazing 4-H work. For several years now, 4-H Leader Susannah Jones has been leading youth on Kwajalein in Citizenship activities with neighboring island Ebeye. And this year, the special project they have been working together on is a native plant garden at the Ebeye school. Through a series of meetings, youth must travel by ferry and spend most of the day, get approval for the plants, and select the site- the school was chosen by the group as a place that Ebeye youth could maintain the garden and also because there were already some plants growing.
And now look! The site is filled with native plants, and youth continue to care for the garden and will meet year-round for other environmental and citizenship activities, such as beach clean ups and cultural exchanges.
Meanwhile, back on Kwajalein, another 4-H Leader, Micah Johnson, has been leading a cooking and health club for 2 years. Ms. Johnson incorporates movement and dance into each session, to emphasize the balance between healthy eating and lifestyle as the key to good health.
Here, 4-Hers are making Native American “fry” bread, but to make it healthier they are grilling it!

Thank you Ms. Jones and Ms. Johnson for providing such creative and meaningful experiences for the youth on Kwajalein. This is truly part of the 4-H motto: To Make the Best Better.
How many of you have trouble getting your clubs to complete record books? As one of the most important components of 4-H, we highly recommend some form of record-keeping for youth. It really helps them see progress, set goals and track changes over time for themselves.
In this short video, one of our excellent 4-H Leaders at the Hickam after school program help a group of distracted kinders complete recordbooks! They do an excellent job and learn the importance of record-keeping skills.
